Why’s it so expensive?
Because in a world of fast mass produced plastic, I make something with my hands from start to finish. Here’s a little video of the process with steps and timestamps.
It’d be cheaper and faster if I made resin faux stained glass, but then I’d be ensuring the death of this artform that is marked as Endangered To Be Lost by the Arts Heritage Council.

Why is Dichroic Glass ✨ special ✨
Dichroic glass is made using an aerospace process called vacuum thin film deposition.
The manufacturing process involves several precise steps:
Vacuum Chamber: Ordinary glass is placed inside a highly controlled, airless vacuum chamber.
Vaporization: An electron beam gun vapourises ultra fine materials like quartz crystal and various metal oxides (such as titanium, chromium, or magnesium).
Bonding: The vapour floats upward and condenses onto the surface of the glass in a microscopic crystalline matrix.
Layering: This process is repeated to build up as many as 20 to 30 layers. Despite the multiple layers, the total coating thickness is only about 35 millionths of an inch.
This ultra thin crystalline structure acts as an optical interference filter. It allows certain wavelengths of light to pass through (the transmitted colour) while reflecting others (the reflected colour), which creates the signature colour shift effect as the viewing angle changes.

What is cyanotype?
Cyanotype is a contact print made by exposing UV reactive chemicals to sunlight.
The process is classified as a form of alternative photography as the process uses light to capture imagery.
With cyanotypes though, you don’t use a camera to capture the image, you use the thing itself, which means you are basically capturing the silhouette.
How do cyanotypes work?
When ferric ammonium citrate is mixed with potassium ferricyanide, it becomes sensitive to UV light.
These chemicals are painted onto paper and left to dry in a dark room. Once dry, objects can be arranged onto the paper and placed in the sun to cast a silhouette.
The UV rays from the sun react with the chemicals on the paper to create the recognisable cyan-blue background.
Once the chemicals are rinsed off with water, this fixes the print so it is no longer sensitive to the sun and you are left with a beautiful print. :)
